Anatomy of the spine

The spine consists of 33 bones that begin from the bottom of the skull called the vertebra and extend into the coccyx. The task of the spine is to carry the other parts of the body, especially the skull, to keep it upright and to maintain the spinal cord that enables communication between the body and the brain.

The spinal cord passing through the cavity in the middle of the spine bones (vertebrae) is responsible for transmitting signals from the brain to the body and transmitting signals from the body to the brain. Because of this task, nerve fibers coming out of the spinal cord are separated from the vertebral bodies and distributed to the body.

Cartilage and gelatinous cushions between the spines absorb pressure and prevent friction. Thus, it protects the spinal cord from possible damages.

Causes of low back pain

Low back pain is a symptom. Muscle, bone and nerve pathologies (abnormalities) are the most common causes of low back pain. Disc hernia (hernia) occurs as a result of the degeneration or thinning of the discs located between the vertebrae. The discs protrude outward like gels, pushing or injuring nerve roots. Disc hernia (hernia) is present in only one third of adults older than 20 years of age.

The discs located between the vertebrae lose their volume with age and reveal the picture of spondylitis (arthritis in spine joints in general). Under these conditions, minor damage can lead to nerve damage without tearing of the disc (most commonly the sciatic nerve). Degeneration of the spinal disc (disc between the vertebrae) and spinal stenosis (spinal stenosis) may occur in combination with vertebral joint disease. Spinal stenosis can cause numbness in the legs with short walks or standing.

However;

Appendicitis
Cystitis (urinary tract infection)
Tumor
Osteomyelitis (infection of the bones)
Cauda equina syndrome
Pregnancy
and many other diseases can cause low back pain.

In addition, being older than 35 years, smoking, low condition, high body weight are risk factors for low back pain and disability.

Symptoms of back injuries

The pain may spread to the front, side or back of the leg. However, it can only be felt in the waist area. Increased pain can be seen with activity. The numbness and weakness caused by the compression of the nerves can be felt.
Pain is usually blunt. Stinging and burning pain is not common in low back injuries.

Treatment of low back pain at home

If your pain is persistent and serious, you should see your doctor. A pillow placed between your knees while lying horizontally and on your back can improve your sleeping comfort. By applying special exercises for low back pain, you can relieve your chronic pain or strengthen your back muscles and reduce the burden on your spine.

Drugs such as Ibuprofen (Advil, Aspirin or Motrin), Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be used for short-term relief of low back pain. (Please consult your doctor before using these drugs.) Warm treatment is a frequently preferred method for low back pain. In addition, rest can be tried on condition that it is not longer than 24 hours. However, staying inactive for a long time can reduce the tone of the back muscles (stretch) and cause blood clots to form in the leg veins. In this respect, we recommend a lively lifestyle to our patients, except in cases requiring compulsory rest.
